Fleet Support

Mike Van Gordon

Hi, I’m Mike, or ‘Vanny’ if you prefer. My unofficial title for NWPCCC is ‘Fleet Support’, a catch-all for any car stuff the team need. My expertise and the reason I became involved in the group are installing covert blue light and siren systems for the fleet of volunteers vehicles.

Why do the NWPCCC vehicles need blue lights?
Getting to the scene of an incident rapidly can be the difference between life and death for a patient. The blue light systems fitted to the NWPCCC volunteers’ private vehicles help them get on site quicker and safer than they might otherwise manage in a regular car. Much like an ambulance.

And with NWPCCC being able to respond to call-outs rapidly, they can often be onsite before other emergency services. In this case, the blue lights can alert other road users and the public of their presence. Perhaps not vital in a car park, potentially lifesaving on a motorway.

The installed safety systems must be completely reliable. As the blue lights go into privately owned vehicles, the installation needs to be done without damage to the car. Being covert avoids drawing unwanted attention when the cars aren’t on call.

What motivates you to support NWPCCC in this way? The service the team provide is vital to the communities they support. Being able to apply my skill set to help the team is incredibly important to me. It would cost around £1000 to have the lights and siren system fitted, and that’s just the labour. Knowing I can save the charity that money to fund attending incidents and equipping vehicles with medical equipment is very satisfying. It makes the hours spent installing the system worth every minute.

Any highlights over this time?
The first time you get the lights flashing is always satisfying. I think I’m just a little kid on the inside.  Those first flashing lights will always make me grin like a fool! The guys in the team usually keep me motivated with Haribo and Maoam, and I can’t say no to that. Getting the first system installed was probably the most satisfying. But getting a whole system installed in sub-zero temperature was a definite highlight.
